Apart from being a global campaign on the importance of kidney function, World Kidney Day also highlights the prevalence of kidney disease and emphasizes diabetes and high blood pressure as some of the risk factors for a person developing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). It also encourages diabetic and hypertensive patients to perform systematic CKD screening.

Furthermore, World Kidney Day is expected to promote kidney disease prevention behavior, and educate all medical professionals about their role in detecting and reducing the risk of kidney disease, especially in high-risk populations. As well as pressing the role of local and national health authorities in controlling the epidemic of kidney disease.

On World Kidney Day, all governments are encouraged to take action and invest in advanced kidney screening services, promote transplantation as a curative procedure for people with kidney failure, and promote organ donation campaigns as a life-saving initiative.
